I got ChatGPT to replace 1 day of finance work using just these 2 words

Two Words, Three Files

Every month, the same file is created somewhere on my drive. With rows I don't need, columns I don't need, and nothing usable until the tabs are cleaned and merged.

You know this file. Yours might be expense reports, vendor invoices, or a payroll variance sheet.

They’re useless until someone spends an hour cleaning them. Then useless the second the next one is created again. It becomes a horrible repetitive cycle that wastes your time.

So I fixed this.

I just typed "card cycle" into a new chat in ChatGPT.

Using just a messy Excel file. I watched ChatGPT give me back a clean spreadsheet, a branded dashboard, and a boardroom-ready deck.

I didn’t copy/paste anything into PowerPoint. I didn’t create any pivot tables. And I didn’t have to fix tab after tab manually.

I did it using ChatGPT Skills.

Today, I will show you how…

💡 What is a ChatGPT Skill?

A Skill is a set of instructions you write once and save inside ChatGPT, like the SOP you'd give to a new team member, or a recipe you’d give to a cook. They live in ChatGPT's Plugins panel.

You explain the task in full, one time. Then ask ChatGPT to turn the chat into a Skill, and after that you don’t have to explain the task again.

You just say the trigger word and it runs automatically.

Building a ‘Super Skill’

A ‘Super Skill’ is made of several smaller Skills.

They are connected together so that the output of the first becomes the input of the next.

Here’s how I built my super skill, triggered from 2 words, carrying out boring tasks that would have previously taken some finance pros a whole day.

1. Build a clean-up Skill (with audit)

Open a new chat, upload your messy file, and explain exactly what you want, once.

Here’s an example.

“I want to consolidate the tabs in one tab and I want to keep only the date, the description and the amount and the chargebacks. Also tell me for each line from which company and cardholder it corresponds to. Audit the work done and add the audit tab.”

Once you’re happy with the output, convert it into a skill.

“Create a skill from this workflow. Every time I upload a corporate card statement file with multiple tabs and ask to clean the data, automatically trigger the skill to consolidate all tabs into one, keep only the date, description, amount and chargebacks, and add the company and cardholder for each transaction. Name the skill ‘Data Cleaning’.”

2. Build a branding Skill

Upload your brand guide, or a few screenshots of your colors and fonts, and describe what you want applied:

“I am a CFO and I need to create a branding skill for future dashboards and any other file created. Trigger it whenever creating anything that may require adding design. Apply a glowy, modern finance dashboard branding in dark blue and bright orange: dark blue base with bright orange highlights and trend accents, soft glow on KPI cards and key numbers, semantic colors, modern typography, horizontal KPI cards with trend indicators, variance highlighting only for material deviations over 5%, big titles, big numbers, drill-down over clutter.”

Then, once you’re happy, ask ChatGPT to build it as a skill.

Build this, and you never have to give a color palette again. Every dashboard, chart, and deck applies it on its own from here.

3. Ask for a Dashboard

Upload your cleaned file from step 1 and ask:

“Create a self-contained dynamic HTML dashboard from the uploaded Excel data, focused on statistics, financial analysis, and anomaly detection. Include dynamic KPI cards, filters, charts, outlier detection, and a drill-down transaction table. Show total spend, count, average, median, standard deviation, categories, cardholders, trends, distribution, and largest transactions.”

(it should now take into account the branding skill you created in step 2 as well)

Then… save this as a skill:

“Create a reusable Skill from the final dashboard in this chat. Skill name: Card Statement Dashboard Builder. Make sure to keep the structure which was requested in the initial prompt.”

4. Create the Boardroom Deck

You can do this in the same chat.

“I am a CFO of a company and I need to create a presentation for managers and cardholders meeting based on the Excel file.”

It should use the branding Skill automatically, and build the slides straight from the dashboard's findings.

5. Link them into a ‘Super Skill’

Open a new chat and type:

“Create a skill called ‘card cycle’. When I upload a card statement Excel file and ask "card cycle", do this in order:

1. Run the "Data consolidation skill",
2. Then use the cleaned file to run "card-statement-dashboard-builder"
3. Apply our branding on it.
4. Create a branded PowerPoint presentation from the cleaned data and dashboard insights.

Final output: cleaned Excel file, branded HTML dashboard, branded PowerPoint.”

On top, don't only think about your card statements. Any file you clean and present the same way every month, expense reports, vendor invoices, payroll variance reports, is a Super Skill waiting to be built.

The One Thing to Remember

Just like with people, skills are the building blocks of your work.

Use skills individually, or chain them together, it’s up to you.

Either way, using this method, you can become a ‘Super Finance Pro’ doing higher quality work, in less time.
